Leeds Uni Occupied!

Last Thursday, 22nd January, a number of people , “occupied” the Botany House building in the Leeds University campus  “in protest against the attacks on Gaza.”

The group then made the following demands of the University:

  • Open the books to show which companies that back the Israeli state the Uni is investing in and/or receiving funding from.
  • Disinvestment from said companies
  • To Release a statement condemning the Israeli state’s attacks and blockade on Gaza
  • Surplus resources (computers, books etc) to be sent to students in Gaza
  • Scholarships for at least five Gazan students to study in Leeds
  • No repercussion, legal or otherwise for activists

You can follow their progress on the blog they have set up.

Tiberius belives that, whatever you may think about the tactical choice of occupying a building, this is an act born out of compassion and the genuine wish to alliviate the suffering of others – as such it is ‘a good sign’.

He therefore left a  message of solidarity on their messageboard asking what practical means of assistance could be offered by the people of Leeds in support of the group’s aims.
