There’s No Business In Show Business

Yesterday, ITV announced it is cutting 600 jobs across its businesses…The announcement came as ITV reported a loss of £2.7bn for 2008 after a huge write-down in the value of its assets…About 150 of the jobs will be lost in Leeds.

Tiberius notes with bemusement the response of Leeds MPs reported in today’s YEP:

Leeds West MP John Battle said the move could set a “worrying trend” of replacing “real location dramas” ( “real locations” presumably including that unmapped,  aeroplane-magnet Emmerdale) “with “cheap reality TV” which would lead to viewers turning off” – neglecting the fact that viewers must already be turning off, hence the cuts.

Meanwhile, Leeds North West MP Greg Mulholland “has written to ITV executive chairman Michael Grade asking him to reconsider the cuts”  – an action which demonstrates gesture politics at its most pointless.

These are just the most recent examples of both the confusion (Battle) and denial (Mulholland) with which our political leadership meets the economic turmoil of this city.
